Coming from a microsoft fanboy using vb6 for almost 7 years and shift to java and learn the language is pretty painful. It took me 3 months to understand and learn java+eclipse another month to learn the basics of gwt+rpc. For those who are interested check this showcase out: http://www.smartclient.com/smartgwt/showcase/

This is called SmartGWT its a wrapper for the native GWT. Once familiar with the basic coding it is always advise as they say to learn the native GWT to take advantage on Google tools such as search, maps, bloggs, picassa and more.

GWT continues to evolve especially in the field of commands and recently they introduce code splitting, UI binding and a lot of great enhancements on it.

Overall it took me at least 1 year to learn this stuff because most of the time you rely on community and logics.
