windows xp search containing text problems

Published 10-29-2007 12:07 AM | jokiz

i've been told by one of my officemates that the windows xp search containing text does not work with all file types.  of course mr. skeptical always verify it and was surprised that indeed it does not work for all file types, even with C# cs files!  just sharing!

It is indeed broken.  This issue has driven me to the point of insanity on more than one occasion.  My solution was to install a windows port of all my favorite Unix tools so that I could use egrep, find and friends:

unxutils.sourceforge.net

good to hear from you again robert!  i'm not a unix guy so couldn't relate, but thanks for posting the link. anyway, i've read something that there is a registry hack to include other file extensions aside from the default one, what a tedious way.

See kb 309173 "Using the "A word or phrase in the file" search criterion may not work" to fix XP and Windows 2003 at support.microsoft.com/.../309173 .  Vista can also be changed via the Indexing Options control panel, advanced, UAC prompt, File Types tab, add new extension.
